Another fun podcast! There WAS a great deal of Twilight related news last week. This is just the beginning…but I don’t think there will be quite as much info out there as there was with Twilight since fan access has been a bit more limited. That’s a good thing.
My family and I were really excited and pleased with the trailer and the transformation. Of course we all expected similar CGI to The Golden Compass so there were no real surprises there – except that they actually SHOWED it. I was expecting them to keep the wolves as a surprise, but it was a smart move. TwilightMoms has a side-by-side picture comparison of a real wolf vs CGI wolf and I have to admit, it looks pretty good. The problem with re-creating real animals with CGI (eg. Chronicles of Narnia) is that you can always tell they’re not real – no matter how good the CGI.
Looking forward to your next podcast theme – it’s something controversial in the “Twilight Universe”.
It hadn’t occurred to me but you’re totally right – they probably should have left he wolves a mystery for a little longer. I’ve looked at the image of the wolf again and I’m starting to warm up to it but something about it still doesn’t sit right with me. And it probably *does* have something to do with the fact that we *know* they’re not real. I guess when it’s in a film like “The Chronicles of Narnia” it’s easier to swallow because it’s hardcore fantasy whereas the Twilight Universe feels much more realistic.
I think Narnia did a really good job creating the animals, but I think it worked best in the sequences where there were a lot of them so you aren’t focusing so much on each one. In general, I’m always the one to pick practical effects of CGI but that one just worked for me.
I was surprized they showed the wolves, but after thinking about it remember that last year Twilight’s first preview actually showed the ballet room scene which is in essence the climax of the film. I was more shocked at that then them showing the wolf.
I bet most of it is due to what’s been film schedule, I know the mirror sequence in Twilight was one of the first things they did and the New Moon trailer certainly looks like it was Vancouver shot which was early days there.
You bring up a good point Shannon – it’s easier to swallow effects when they’re sort of lumped together into batches. That said, the image is slowly growing on me (much like the make-up did in “Twilight” – by the third or fourth time I’d seen the film the stark make-up no longer had the cringing impact it did the first time around).
