I’m just glad this discussion is happening throughout the industry – and the Twilight series plays no small part. I know Hollywood loves to be able to put everything in sellable units, but I do not believe that the success of the Twilight movies will be able to be replicated. The movies are a success because of the book series, so yes, there is a built-in fan base. So I would really love to see this as an opportunity for a female director to take over for the fourth movie (if that happens) and to really make, not just a good adaptation, but a great movie.
P.S. (Aeon Flux was Charlize Theron; Ultra Violet was Milla Jovovich)
Ack! Thanks for the correction there I totally forgot (obviously) that Aeon Flux was Charlize Theron – I think I saw that and Ultraviolent on the same weekend.
I think you are right that the success of Twilight won’t be able to be replicated, it was like a perfect storm of events, but I do think it will open doors for more film for and by women.
I’ve been thinking about Jennifer’s Body that we discussed during the cast and it does have a woman director, writer and 2 leads but I think when you have Megan Fox as the starring role that really says ‘guy film’ to me. Maybe it’s doing something different though. I admit I haven’t seen it yet, and I know a lot of women who did see it – but they are all horror fans.
I’ve been meaning to see Jennifer’s Body. When I saw the trailer I thought it looked like a “fun” horror movie and I thought Megan Fox looked like a perfect choice, but it’s one of those things I would have to do alone. None of my friends like “horror”, none of my family either.
As for the fourth book/movie, frankly I am dreading it. I am very curious, but I cannot imagine how they would tackle that one. So many obstacles…
Also, when you guys get a chance, please talk up director David Slade
So far I love the poster, and I love that the newborns will be truly frightening…but that’s ALL I am hearing. I worry we are right back to the discussion of the problems with having a male director and going after the male demographic.
